Lakeshore - [conventions] WorldCon in retrospective
A more wretched hive of scum and villainy

Well, I’ve been meaning to post for days. Already WorldCon is a colorful blur in my recent memory. I spent about an hour this afternoon collating my business notes, two freaking pages of a file concerning novel projects, short fiction invitations, collaborative efforts, and miscellaneous other bits. Including a few Sekrit Projekts. You will learn. Oh yes, you will learn!

Just a few of the high points:

Dinner with John Scalzi, Jim Kelly and Steve Feldberg of Audible — we discussed the ongoing Audible project and talked a lot about audio books, marketing and the state of our little corner of the publishing industry.

The “you pick the panel” panel with Connie Willis, Greg Bear and Chris Garcia. An hour of wall-eyed insanity, moderated by me and my knitted tumor.

Cruising the dealer room to see Escapement on so many tables, in so many hands.
Giving out Campbell pins to all the current and former Campbell nominees I could find. More to come, both on the blog and in real life.

Giving away the Campbell tiara to the etherally radiant Mary Robinette Kowal.

The entire Hyatt Regency bar cheering for Mary Robinette and Scalzi as a knot of us trolled through heading for the loser’s party. This including a bunch of marketing people and a wedding party who obviously had no idea why they were madly shouting and clapping.

Everybody I met, every place I hung out. You guys were awesome. If I hadn’t been so busy there, I would have blogged more and captured more memories, but I was too busy being a blur. Even to myself.

Next year in Montreal, ne c’est pas?

I loved seeing you there, even if only from a fawning distance.

I seem to be developing a pattern of having all the great stuff happen the day after Worldcon ends. Two years ago, I ran into Robert Charles Wilson in a departure lounge at John Wayne Airport leaving LACon IV. We had a great time chatting while waiting for our flights.

This year, I continued my vacation by flying to PDX, and no sooner got here than I discovered that you were giving a reading at Powell's. An excellent reading, and thanks again for the bookstore display of the cover of Escapement! It's still with me, wrapped in newspaper (I always knew that those free hotel copies of the USA Today would be useful for something) waiting for me to get to a FedEx/Kinkos before I fly home to Cincinnati this weekend.

Thanks again, and next time I promise not to hijack a Scalzi thread to say so. :)

Hugh -- It was fun to see you there. You had a lot of good questions and were very supportive. Enjoy the cover display!

Best,

Jay (who completely agrees about the serendipity of Cons and con-related travel)

Thank you again for the new and shiny. And for another opportunity to use this icon. :)
