Ray Bradbury and the future — (Thanks to willyumtx.)

McSweeney’s with Selections from H.P. Lovecraft’s Brief Tenure As a Whitman’s Sampler Copywriter. — (Thanks to willyumtx.)

The Guru’s Handbook talks about patience — Interesting stuff.

iRobot Connect-R — Creepy. Really creepy. (Thanks to MG.)

Historian suggests Southerners defeated the Confederacy — Speaking as a Southerner with strong antebellum roots, I have never understood the ongoing fetishization of the disastrous loss of a profoundly unjust war. There’s nothing romantic about slavery and insurrection. (Thanks to danjite.)

A Teacher on the Front Line as Faith and Science Clash — Evolution in the classroom. More culture war stuff. (Thanks to lt260.)

Your guide to America’s next vice president — Hahahhahahahahahahaha. (Thanks to MK.)

Language Log on censorship and stupidity — The issues around The Jewel of Medina are already complicated. There’s also a sidebar question here about the “race to the bottom” in making social decisions based on who will be the most offended. That’s the calculus which underlies much of American politics, thanks to our friends on the Right, and it’s also a path to madness.

I'll agree with the creepy on the iRobot. I wonder just how long before we hear about someone deciding that such a device is sufficient as a babysitter for their child.

Isn't the Connect-R just a glorified baby monitor with wheels? Now if it were an anthropomorphic re-creation of the missing parent? That would be creepy.

I'm in the 3rd round of questions for the beta test of the iRobot Connect-R.

I figure it will be hoot with the cats and to take to cons.

The Bradbury prune commercial is, of course, the work of the brilliant Stan Freberg.
