I had the pleasure of watching a real SR-71 take off. It was for one of the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) Airshows in the late '80s if I recall correctly, and Dad took the family to Toronto International (now Pearson International) Airport to watch the runway. We were quite a bit aways from the Blackbird* but even from that distance it was an impressive sight... right out of my schoolboy marginal doodles with shock-diamond afterburner trail and everything.
-- Steve never did see a Shuttle launch, but thinks this is a worthy "consolation prize" experience.
PS: Still a breath-taking bird; hard to believe it's almost 50 years old, looking at the fuselage.
* I remember holding my dinky 110-cartrige camera up to the family binoculars to try to get a picture... not a technique I'd recommend, by the by. I must go rooting through the cupboards to see if I can find that roll again.
