On that "Cold War secret" -- the KH series satellites weren't quite as hush-hush as that story makes them out to be. I knew about their existence and some of the capabilities when I was in the Army, involved in low-altitude aerial photo equipment.

Also, some aspects of the program were totally public, like the parachute/C-130 film retrieval.

Didn't that feature in a James Bond movie or some such?

May have. I don't remember. I *do* remember news coverage on the retrieval system. One of those "gee whiz" tech stories.

I did a post a while back on urban fantasy series and came up with six off the top of my head that had missing parent(s). And in a couple them the mother left and the father was a mean jerk.

I wonder if it's not because they're working off the mythological tropes that require great suffering to create a hero?

Both my one finished novel and my novel-in-progress feature Bad Fathers, I admit, but I always assumed that was just my own biases seeping in. Either way, I have resolved that whatever book I write next, it will feature exemplary parents.

Have you seen the PBS/BBC miniseries with Kenneth Branagh as Shackleton? If ever an actor was destined for a role...
