My aunt's cabin, where [info]tillyjane (a/k/a my mom) and I are staying, is at about 9,500 feet of altitude in the Santa Rosita hills south and east of Westcliffe, CO. I live about 200 feet above sea level in Portland, OR. So what did I do my first morning here?

I walked the 2.5 miles of extremely rural Keepsake Loop, with about 400 feet of elevation change. In the 20 degree morning air.

It took me 55 minutes to handle the hike, starting at the high point, walking downhill for the first half, then uphill the second half. I had to stop four times to regain my breath on the climb back to the cabin. By the time I returned, I was utterly wrung out, soaked with sweat, and chilled.

But it sure felt good.

We're off to Monarch Pass in a bit.

Duuude. Yeah, we did that too on a regular basis our first few trips to Colorado's Rockies. Now we pace ourselves a bit better--ironically, often we're better prepared than we used to be just because we spend more time at elevation in the winter due to skiing. Still, the difference between 5,000 feet and 9,500 feet is striking.

Enjoy Monarch Pass. I want to go there sometime; my great-grandfather owned silver mines in the area or so family lore has it. In any case, it's part of my Reynolds family heritage.

Lovely photo (seen on FB). So glad it felt good to go walkies down then up (my pref is generally t'other way around, but that's not always an option ;-) Your Strength & Con (assuming the sweating 'n' chilling don't take their toll badly) are definitely improving, which is Good News.

Welcome to Colorado, where the air is rare.
