Yesterday was [info]the_child's eighth grade graduation. (They called it a "promotion", I think.) The event was held in a church a bit north of the school, and was absolutely lovely. My whole extended family attended, and Donnie Reynolds shot some more footage. [info]the_child spoke (twice) and was part of several musical and spoken word group performances. They are all so young and beautiful and capable.

Where did these kids come from?

I didn't take a camera into the graduation, but I did take some photos of [info]the_child and Mother of the Child before we left Nuevo Rancho Lake.

Yeah, we get yelled at by higher ups if we call it "eighth grade graduation." My school makes a Huge Honking Deal about it and for that school it's pretty much a graduation ceremony (driven by the parents organizing it). In my low SES school, though (60% free and reduced lunch, probably means an actual poverty rate of 70-75%), the odds are high that for a significant minority of the group, the eighth grade promotion is the only graduation they are going to get. Our interim principal (who retired from the biggest middle school in the district last year) raised her eyebrows at how elaborate the promotion ceremony was. But when I told her that comment (from a long-term teacher in the building who'd been there for twenty years), she shook her head sadly. After eight years, though, it's the truth. For that school, anyway.

Anyway, many congrats to all!

For my kids, it was called a "culmination." Hmmph!

Congratulations to your daughter! I don't get this whole business about not calling it a graduation. Of course it's a graduation! Wanting to call it something else is a new one on me.
