I think the reputation we carry is post-Victorian. Consider - as I say below - the Edwardian passion for devilled kidneys at breakfast and angels-on-horseback as a savoury after dinner. I suspect that that notion of bland bad food is an artefact of wartime and subsequent rationing...

So what happened to the English?

We colonised India, of course. Curry is now officially the English dinner-of-choice.

But now I am seriously wondering whether the English reputation for bland food and bad cooking is actually an artefact of a very brief window, the war years and the decades after. Imported spices of course were historically - indeed hysterically - expensive, but there is a splendidly spicy vernacular tradition built on local produce, mustard and horseradish and Worcestershire sauce. You can't say "bland" in the same sentence as "devilled kidneys", the tongue won't permit of it. Damn you, Jay, now I may have to do some actual, y'know, research...

It is true, but Worcestershire sauce is very much an English flavouring, and has been for two hundred years. All three of those things I list are building-blocks in what I think of as the Edwardian palate: which is why I think that notion of bland bad food has to be constrained at one end to a period later than that.

I certainly defer to your greater familiarity in this regard, and actually I would probably concur wrt the edwardian palate. I was merely mildly tweaking you about the worcestershire sauce, which is another import/adaptation from india, as opposed to mustard and horseradish which have been part of english cuisine for a lot longer. no harm, no foul?
