I wrote my doctor an email last night. It was about the fact that I've had moderately red-tinged stool three times in the past ten days.

Long time readers may recall this is how my cancer journey started, with blood in my stool.

I am not too concerned yet. I can think of several possible causes which are not especially alarming. Nonetheless, I follow up.

And you. If you're 50 or older, or otherwise at risk, say with a family member who's experienced colon cancer, go get a colonscopy. They're annoying and kind of embarrassing and truly no fun. But if you think colonoscopies are annoying, try dying of colon cancer as I am busily doing.

If you love anyone else in this world, do them a favor and get checked. If you love yourself, do yourself a favor and get checked. Hell, do me a favor and get checked. I don't need company on the cancer ward.

You hear me?

And that's where I'm going this Friday, for exactly those reasons.

Like you, I'm not terribly concerned yet, and we have several possible other things it could be.

But like you say, it's important.

I'm 41, and just had this discussion with my father, who is now 3+ years into his diagnosis for it, and he's 82.

From the first day of putting it up, which was within a week or two of his original diagnosis in 2010, my brother's CaringBridge site had (and still has) in the header:

"If you are due for a colonoscopy, schedule it ASAP. If you are overdue for a colonoscopy, SCHEDULE IT TODAY!"

I had my first one (after two previous sigmoidoscopies) this past February. I never intend to be late for one.

I'm picking up janeehawkins this afternoon from her one-year follow-up colonoscopy, as it happens, and hoping that it's much better than last year's. I'm due for my five-year colonoscopy this fall.

Thanks for your continual reminders. I know you didn't intend to have a tertiary career as a publisc service announcement, but you've done a good job at this task thrust upon you.

Over-60 and up to date on colonoscopy and mammograms. Recent skin check because my sister has basal cell carcinoma. HPV negative so no more Paps.

Eating my broccoli, just to be sure.
