there was a mass shooting in the Netherlands the week I arrived there, and the media wasn't hand wringing over the idea that more guns would have protected everyone, ( 16 people died) but it was a national moment of "what could we do to prevent this? How did we fail this person who felt this was his only option?"

( Alienated depressed young adult who had a fascination for guns and was barred from a shooting range opened fire in Alphen An de Rijn, south of amsterdam.)

It was refreshing to see honest dialog in the wake of a shooting instead of panicked calls for more arming, and cries of "too soon". Its an "if not now, when?" question.

One thing I noticed when we were in Paris last year was that armed police--visibly armed, carrying weaponry that makes me nervous in the hands of US cops (machine pistols, for one) are everywhere. Train stations, the Eiffel Tower...and making regular promenades around the bridges of the Seine, sirens blaring, with no apparent destination except to make several loops. Was a puzzlement.
