After the recent death of Dao Ming, the_child’s cat, she and her mother this past Wednesday got a new kitten Mei Mei. Last night Mei Mei was killed by a raccoon.

This afternoon Mother of the Child took Pas de Chat, her cat of 23 years (that is not a typo) to the vet to be put to sleep. After about four years of kitty Alzheimer’s and growing completely deaf, Pas de Chat’s quality of life had dropped precipitously over the past few weeks, with no food or water intake for the past several days.
I went to say good-bye (I’ve known Pas de Chat since 1992) and found myself in tears. I suppose death and dying has become a far more immediate and personal topic than it used to be for me. Mother of the Child and the_child will have a Buddhist ceremony later in the back yard.
Pas de Chat’s final portrait, just before they headed out the door…

Well, after last week's mishaps, the cats have gone to a new, loving home. deedop and Chef Chopper have taken them in at Casa Deedop. They were cat-less after the passing of Audrey a while back, and it seems a good fit. They're also home consistently, which is not true of me, and which was definitely upsetting my little citizens. Thank you everyone for the suggestions — in fact, I did have the_child visiting them everyday in my absence, it just wasn't enough for what they needed. Casa deedop is only about 5 minutes' drive from Rancho Lake, and very close to lillypond's new joint, so I'll see them and they'll see me.
In other news, Mother of the Child gifted me with the framing of an old oil painting tillyjane had done of me and my granddaddy Lake when I was about three years old. It shows a shambling old man, from the back, holding hands with a blonde child in Dennis the Menace red, tugging to be away in the manner of rambunctious children everywhere. It's very sweet, and from a part of my life of which I have very little recollection.

I need to find a home here in Portland for my two cats. They are pleasant middle-aged cats who have lived together with me for about four years. They're not adapting well to my move to Nuevo Rancho lake and the very busy travel schedule I keep, and they need to live somewhere with more consistent care and attention. If you're in the Portland area and can take in two more animal friends, please let me know.

Christopher Smart, "on his cat Jeoffrey," which was eventually set to music by Bejamin Britten.
"For I will consider my Cat Jeoffrey "For he is the servant of the Living God duly and daily serving him."
It goes on from there, at great length.
(And thanks to tillyjane for showing me this.)

You know you're a writer when...
...your cat walks on your keyboard... ...you yell at your cat but do not stop typing... ...your cat responds by sneezing on the screen, productively... ...you yell at your cat some more while you finish typing the thought before abandoning ship for the paper towels and wetwipes... ...you pause before the wipedown to study the cat crud to check the color and consistency for future reference.

Taking the_child to the beach this afternoon. No Intarwebs (or phone, probably) from then until late Sunday.
Also, if you've noticed a dearth of photos lately, it's because the camera is in the shop again. Grr.
And on another note, the Niece has decided that my cats, Port and Ahriman, are "Sport" and "Hairy Man."
More news as it develops.

I have the world's most disgusting cat.
No, I'm not telling you why. I'd be banned from lj or something if I did.
You may shop as usual, there is no need to return to your homes.
