Mind you, running bandwidth through weird plumbing isn't that implausible. It's how Mercury Telecom cabled London in 1982, the first UK telco to compete with BT's monopoly -- they bought the disused-for-70-years high pressure pneumatic air grid and ran fibre through the empty two-inch cast iron pipes.
