I have decided that except for technology upgrades and replacement items, I pretty much own all the stuff I need. (This doesn't account for my strange tastes, of course.) The two things I wish I had are a commercial-grade shredder, and a low-end paper jogger.

It's nice to have ambitions.

I really, really, really want a deli-style meat slicer, and maybe an autoclave. After that I think we'll be set for gadgetry.

Go to police or bankruptcy auctions. You see them there all the time, going for very little money.

Hmmm. What about books? Buying new books is the thing that keeps cluttering up our place. We have fifteen floor-to-ceiling bookcases, jammed full of books and now five new waist-high piles on the floor in front of them. There is also a similar pile building beside my bed.

I think if it weren't for books and comics, I would be in the same position.

Well, yeah, books. But they're kind of like wall insulation for the mind.

I just spent two months cleaning out my deceased mother's house. Trust me. Own nothing.

On a completely unrelated matter... could you email me with your current mailing address, that I might better send you the Paper Golem manuscript for your blurbing pleasure?

Office Depot had a sale recently on a heavy-duty shredder. Aviva/Ativa or some such thing. Cross-cut, shreds DVDs, CDs and credit cards. Since my work shredder had croaked despite the best efforts of all the mechanical tinkerers in the school, I begged for a new one from my Special Ed budget (must have work shredder, heavy duty, especially since I work with a lot of confidential documents and must shred a LOT of stuff).

School secretary has one too. Loves it.

So far, it does a great job. It's about $150--not that bad a price.

As for gadgets I need...nothing really for the house. But clothes, shoes, books, and the newest horsey trinket...oh yeah...and yeah, I'd like a laptop so I can work someplace besides my desktop. Especially nice when I'm traveling.

Guess I'll wait until I actually make a sale for that one, though...

Erm... what's a paper jogger? I assume it isn't for keeping your reams of paper in good shape/good health... ???

It's basically a vibrator to make a ream of paper very happy. Usually a vee-shape, or a table with a corner brace, and a motor which jiggles it very quickly until paper out of the printer (or copier) goes back into true/square. As opposed to, say, shaking it in your hands to square it up, which is a bitch with a 900 page manuscript.
