Very interesting. We may never visit any planets found in this way, but just being able to point to Earth-like destinations would be mind-blowing. All we need then is a nice little signal from one of them, and maybe humans would stop killing each other and start working together instead.

Wonder whether they'll set up seti-like work units, if processing the data is an issue?

I am apparently not yet fully burdened with the blessings of consciousness yet, because I initially read your last sentence as:

"Wonder whether they'll set up yeti-like work units..."

Which would be wonderful, of course.

It's half past midnight here, so there's a very good chance that's what I meant to type. Or didn't actually mean to type but managed to do so anyway.

Make for more interesting maths problems, anyway ...

If it takes four men half a day to fill a tank with buckets, how long would it take nine zodding yetis with eight arms each to perform the same task?

Answer: No time at all, because they'd be smart enough to use a hose.

Naah, then people would just start killing each other over disagreement about the various implications (religious, philosophical, political, technological, etc) of discovering extraterrestrial life and how to respond to the alien civilization.

Shame. I pictured a situation similar to what happens to a classroom full of kids when the teacher comes back in.
