The First Lady, on the Iraq War. "No one suffers more than their President and I do."

Sure. Not the troops in the field, not the families of the dead and wounded, not the Iraqi people. No one.

Those aren't _real_ people! You don't count to her if at that income level.

Ah, yes. I'm sure the Tillmans are all broken up by just how much the Bushes are suffering.

And that's why I want the war to end, Laura. Because I want the suffering to end for you and George. Can't you understand that!!!

Or actually, to put it another way ... I sincerely hope you're both out of your misery soon.

The stupid, it burns!

Say, I bet that's why he doesn't go to Andrews to see the repatriated coffins. He's so deep in his own pain. Add this to his, "Being President is hard," comment from the last election ad you know, I wish him a Dick would just quit.

Now, wait a second... when you take her quote out of context, it sounds terrible. But watching the video, she says something a little different than what is implied in Jay's link.

_____________________________________________

CURRY: [Do] you know the American people are suffering...watching this war...

BUSH: Oh, I know that very much, and believe me that no one suffers more than their president and I do, when we watch.
_______________________________________________

In context, the "suffering" they're discussing is NOT the individualized agony of losing loved ones, but a general attitude. In context, it's still hyperbole-- she's married to a politician, after all, what did you expect-- but it's hardly as insensitive as it's being made out to be.

It would be almost impossible to make Laura Bush sound any more insensitive than she always does. The full quote is certainly no better than Jay's extract. The woman expresses all the compassion of a dirt clod.

It is so much better in context. Now we know she only suffers when she watches.

"Doctor, doctor, it hurts when I do this..."

Well, of course. That's why Bush needed to accept that Purple Heart for all that horrid emotional wounding!

Wow.
That is really disgusting. Yes, you in your cushy mansion, I am sure you suffer trials much greater than the mothers in Africa watching their children die of AIDS...and Iraqi mothers wondering if their families will be united again... Yes. The White House must be an awful place... How's that room service?

Ok. I'm done.
