State Representative Dennis Richardson, an Oregon Republican, has this to say:

This past week has been like no other. On Monday the world witnessed the tragedy at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. On Tuesday Oregon witnessed the passage of Domestic Benefits for same-sex couples (HB 2007) and Civil Rights based on sexual orientation.

Are you still proud of your Republican party?

Oh, for fuck's sake.

I've always wondered why these people use that tired old reasoning re: "imposing their lifestyles and views." They could just come out and say they may now actually *see* said lifestyles in action more often, just like everyone else's lifestyles. The fact that this might lead to the acknowledgement of GLBT folks as actual human beings must be the scariest thing in the world.

(On today's episode of What the Hell is Wrong with Dennis Richardson and His Ilk . . . . )

Oh, that's low.

I am moer than cynical enough to be rarely surprised by politicians, but that's low.

...

At least Oregon DID pass some domestic benefits for gay couples. I'm glad that he is reduced to ridiculous and offensive pot-shots on the subject because he didn't get his way.

Does hell in a hand basket mean anything to anyone? I can't believe these people run the country - and were (sort of) voted in to do so.

How did he miss Alberto Gonzales's masterful defense in front of the Senate?

Eh, it's pretty much me being snarky. I don't seriously expect to be able to reason with people who think this way, because they're prima facie unreasonable -- Richardson's position doesn't arise from any rationally defensible premise of political philosophy, social responsibility or moral calculus in the first place.

Note that I am NOT saying this about conservatism in general, but about the currently prevailing strain of Republican thought -- which has abandoned its pre-Reagan conservative principles wholesale, has very consciously sacrificed the public good in the name of privatization, and pays homage to a particularly narrow-minded form of cafeteria Christianity.

So I mock for the sake of mockery, to shed some daylight on what passes for acceptable in much of American politics. I don't expect to change anyone's mind with these posts, but they make me feel better, and they help me laugh at people who otherwise tempt me to inchoate rage. Which quite frankly is an even worse response on my part that poking with sticks.

Wow, this brings new meaning to the term "parallelism."

My band played in Portland this summer at Amnesia Brewery. First time in Oregon for me.

I absolutely loved it.

Actually, *both* BlueOregon and Loaded Orygun are aiming for Richardson. Loaded Orygun led the charge yesterday, with updates today, and BlueOregon is on it today.

Now if you *really* want snark, check either of those sites out.

Oh.

Well.

Congratulations to Oregon for rational legislation!

My sympathies for having a blithering idiot in office.

Subject: Ask his donors...
I just posted a list of the 76 donors that gave him $65,000 (http://www.blueoregon.com/2007/04/will_dennis_ric.html) (not exactly grassroots)... and we're asking people to call 'em POLITELY and ask, "Do you agree with Rep. Richardson? Do you intend to donate to him again?"
