Saw some weird stuff from the plane windows coming and going from ABQ.

On the way in, there was this odd business with very short runways, which I figured to be a VTOL facility or heliport, presumably as part of Kirtland AFB.

On the way out, there was this thing, which is basically a bridge over a pit with overhead frameworks, sort of like a mine header, supporting what appears to be a section of (simulated?) runway. Again, I presume some aspect of Kirtland AFB, perhaps for training. Without a low-angle photo, which I failed to take from the airplane window, it's difficult to describe, but I had a lot of trouble envisioning what this was for.

Definitely part of the AFB, though I can't begin to guess what they're for. I just know because I've never even heard of Southgate Ave and I used to live a few blocks from the base.

If the picture with the pit was for a shipyard, I'd say it was a drydock. Maybe something like that, so they can work on the undercarriage without hoisting the whole plane in the air?

Second one - possible load testing to see just how much pressure VTOL aircraft put on the runway below them?
