Well, Alcatraz was a blast. Full report later, with photos, suffice to say it was too cool and too much fun. I'm now in the SFO airport waiting for my flight and wishing I'd gotten less sun.

If you're USAnian, Happy Fourth. The rest of y'all world citizens move along, nothing to see here. Me, maybe I'll see fireworks from the air.

We visited San Francisco in late May and took a catamaran out and round Alcatraz, though we didn't land. Amazing. Then out under the bridge in choppy water, being buzzed by lunatic windsurfers. It was a marvellous day. San Francisco was great, too - we took a trolley up and down one of the hills, which reminded me of a Man From Uncle book I used to read and re-read as a teenager. The town is so unplanned and 'organic' - can't think of a better word. You can see its history as you walk around, because its roots are still there on the streets. Our more interesting European cities are like that (I'm from England). I hope one day I'll get to go back and maybe live there for a week and walk around. You get a real feel for a city when you walk it, and SF looks as if it would repay that in spades.

Happy 4th!
