ericjamesstone and I are going at it in comments on yesterday's Tony Snow post. I have small expectation either of us will change each other's thinking, but I like and respect him, and it always benefits me to be challenged on my positions. Makes me check my assumptions, for one thing.

Interesting stuff. (And if you're moved to comment, be respectful, please.)

Hey Jay, I was moved to comment, and I thought I was being respectful. If my comment didn't come off as such, I apologize. I thought he was making a spurious argument (with Al Gore) in a "if you want to say this, then you must say that or you're hypocritical" which is a common rhetorical ploy I see by those on the right of the political spectrum (and sometimes on the left as well). It's bad argument. I think people need to be called on these things. Especially when they attempt to knock out a whole segment of the opposition's arguing points by dismissing them as not relevant.

No worries. I was pointing at you with that remark -- in fact your comment and my post pretty much crossed in the mail, as it were.

And yes, I agree with your assessment of the validity of that line of argument. I tried to address it in another comment myself.

I'll try to remain respectful, too. I've tried to explain my Al Gore parallel a little better in the other thread, and also why I think the "Bush lied about WMD" arguments are of no relevance to the particular point. The question of whether Bush liead about WMD is, of course, important in the larger picture, but I believe it's of no relevance to the narrow question I'm debating.

After trying, I've learned I'm not capable of a polite reply. Hopefully this statement is polite enough.

should anyone have any doubt about lies, perhaps this clip will set them to rest.

Please note that Mr. Snow used the collective pronoun "we," so the narrow point with regards to whether or not Bush made a specific quote is irrelevant, as Snow would be lying if Bush et al. had stated something which could be legitimately paraphrased as the statement "Iraq and 9/11 are linked."

Frankly, the sitting President of the United States, George Walker Bush, should be impeached, tried, and if found guilty, sentenced to death by lethal injection in his home state of Texas as a traitor.
