Belgium on the rocks — Political crises come in every size and shape.

New Mars results: no liquid water? — Bad Mars! No water! And thus the hopes of another generation of sky watchers are compromised. Some amazing photography, though.

Sponge-like Mats Make Good Habitat in Redwood Canopies: Wandering Salamanders Benefit — Money shot:
Arboreal salamanders in old-growth forests may be predators at the top of a diverse community

Arboreal salamanders? Really? There may yet be hope for the Pacific Tree Octopus! (And seriously, it's a cool environment for you fiction writers to consider working with...)

LOLthulhu — Passed along by that villain goulo.

The Grandmother Hypothesis — Apparently menopause is the fault of your mother's mother. The cool thing about this is how it demonstrates the way social phenomena affect evolution.

Senate tied in knots by filibusters — You know, there used to be a political party, I believe it styles itself the party of principled consistency, that when it considered itself in the Permanent Majority argued the very use of Senate filibusters by the minority party was wrong. They even proposed a so-called "Constitutional Option" to eliminate the filibuster. Nice to see the Republicans are living up to their principles yet again.

That's all for now, folks. I'm about to hop on a plane, and will be at Foolscap late this afternoon. My programming schedule is here.

Re grandmother to blame link. Very interesting. My most recent theory is that I think it could be ones own daughter that begins a women's menopause (for those that have children). When she kicks into puberty, there are pheromones put out telling the mother her fertility isn't needed for much longer, and so she starts menopause. We already know that women respond to other women's pheromones with shared timing of menstruation when women are in groups. I don't see why this sort of thing couldn't affect women in this way. Who knows if it works in reverse too so that mother's turn on their daughter's puberty. They already have data that girls that live without a male in the home have earlier menarche. Family relationships do affect this.

I find this so fascinating. Thanks for the link.

They will find liquid water.
There's frozen water at the poles of Mars--- so somewhere below the north pole and above the south pole there is bound to be a melting region.
...now if they could only find intelligent life in D.C.---that would be a discovery :P
