You have to know something about American automobile marques to see the problem.

"Grand Marquis" is a Mercury model. The trunk badge is a Ford oval. While Ford owns Mercury, and most Mercury models are badge-clones of Ford models, they don't ever mix the brands directly. Especially not on a single vehicle.

The badge on my Mitsubishi came off once and I had to get a replacement from the dealer. Maybe this is a case of the same, but the rental place either got the wrong brand badge or busy them in bulk and only had the Ford ones around. Or, given what they pay their people, nobody cared enough to make sure the correct badge was glued in place - it was just a "go do this" thing.

Actually, it's more complicated than that. The badge on the trunk lid covers the lock mechanism, so to swap the badges they would have had to change out the bezel of the lock as well. Heck if I know...

That might be deliberate, to force people to use the internal trunk release. Grabbing at straws here...

/me shakes head

A friend of mine used to drive to and from work in a Lada.

He had a bumper sticker on it saying "my other car is a Lambourghini".

Last time I saw him he'd just bought a Countach (which tended to stay parked in the software company's secure lock-up, except at weekends) ... to which he planned to affix a bumper sticker saying "my other car is a Lada".

Games programmers.

I'm sure you've seen the anime flick Appleseed. The bumper sticker on my car reads, "My other body is a hecatonchires."

Ah, if only.

If I had money
Tell you what I'd do
I'd go downtown
Buy a Mercury or two
I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
Ohh I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
Cruise it up and down the road
Well, I had me a girl
Stole her from a friend
Friend got lucky
Stole her back again
Cause she thought he had a Mercury
Ohh she thought he had a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
Cruise it up and down the road
CMON!!
[instrumental break - 6 measures]
Well, hey now mama
Lookin' so fine
Cruisin' round
In your Mercury 69
I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
Ooo, I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
Cruise it up and down the road
My girl went out
Didn't stay long
Bought herself a Mercury
And Cruised it on home
Cause she know I have a Mercury
Ohh she know I have a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
Cruise it up and down the road
[instrumental break - 12 measures]
Well, hey now mama
Lookin' so fine
Cruisin' round
In your Mercury 69
I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
Ooo, I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
Cruise it up and down the road
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
Cruise it up and down the road
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
Cruise it up and down
I'm going out
I'm gonna get me a real job
And I'm gonna buy me some
MERCURY!! Yeah

I wonder if the trunk was replaced at one point? Maybe Ford and L-M have the same manufactorer and that was what was slapped on.

Well, the Mercury Grand Marquis and the Ford Crown Victoria share the same sheet metal.

Yup, they're both made at the St. Thomas/London Ontario plant. Last time I was there it was three Crown Vics for every two Grand Marquis and they were kicking them off the line at 42 cars/hour. Functionally, the only differences between them are (or at least used to be) that the GM had softer bushings in the suspension and body-mounts to take the ride quality up a notch. I'm voting that it had a minor accident and when the body shop replaced the badging, they didn't have the right parts. That wouldn't have gotten past end-of-line inspection. . . I hope.

Maybe Hertz only gets Ford badged versions, to distinguish them when it comes time to sell off their used cars?

Actually the funny part was that I also had a Mercury Grand Marquis from Hertz (the one in the photo was rented by a colleague) and mine had the correct trunk badging.

:nods:

Theoretically, if you had a first year Neon and had to replace its trunk today, you'd have a Plymouth Neon with a Dodge trunk.
