Currently sitting in a parking lot at Del Rey Beach in Seaside, OR. the_child and tillyjane are out beach riding with two guides. I'm ratkilling online so I can write later.

the_child asked me recently why one's voice changes so oddly when breathing helium. I am stonkered by this. Any suggestions?

From Wikipedia: "The voice of a person who has inhaled helium temporarily sounds high-pitched. This is because the speed of sound in helium is nearly three times the speed of sound in air. Because the fundamental frequency of a gas-filled cavity is proportional to the speed of sound in the gas, when helium is inhaled there is a corresponding increase in the resonant frequencies of the vocal tract. (The opposite effect, lowering frequencies, can be obtained by inhaling sulfur hexafluoride.)"

The speed of sound in a gas depends on the properties of that gas. You're trying to talk using a much lighter gas, which bumps the frequency up and makes you sound like Mickey Mouse. :)

I like the description here.

Notice the danger warning on trying the same trick with a heavy gas.
