Dad told me today something I'd never realized. My Grandfather Lake owned a grocery store here in Galveston just after World War II. Dad and Uncle L— shared stories about meat rationing and the art of running a grocery store in that place and time. After lunch today, we drove by the building, which is still standing 10th & K.

Tomorrow we'll visit Grandmother and Granddaddy's house in Gainesville, and stop by their graves.

My great grandfather (Layne) owned a grocery store (a tiny one) in Warrior, AL during the same time period. It had been closed for a few years by then, but when I was 4-5 years old we lived in the house above it. I grew up hearing those same kinds of stories from my dad and my grandfather.
