This morning, the_child, lasirenadolce, Mother of the Child and I went Christmas tree shopping at Lee Farms in Tualatin. Highly recommended in part for the fact that they have the best Christmas tree stands I have ever seen in my life.

Here we is among the artificial forest of the pre-cut. (We eventually got a u-pick out of the fields.)

While walking over to the u-pick fields, I noticed a strange ice formation in the mud beneath my feet.

The physics of this are non-obvious to me, except in the sense that there seem to have been small columns of water at or just beneath the soil surface.

As usual, more at the Flickr set

Yep. It's water under the surface of loose soil that freezes. It becomes really obvious when you see that type of ice form up in the bark dust. We get a lot of it at the school up on the Mountain...and the little kids (and not-so-little kids) delight in stomping on the ice crystals.

Spike did come along. And he was a very good boy during our entire stay. He loves the Christmas tree. He uses the low branches scritch his back and he likes to sleep under it, too.

When we were at the tree farm, a kid saw Spike and said, "Mom! It's a space puppy!" Heh.

(and Spike says thank you)

Not necessarily small columns but water beneath the surface that freezes and continues to push and grow in the direction of least resistance (up!).
Or you may find that someone has shrunk Superman...
