Can anybody tell me what burnt or burning saffron smells like? I'll get by someplace and buy some in the next day or so if I need to, but I thought somebody might have experienced this along the way.

I've burned a few things in my time (I know exactly what a forgotten burner cover smells like when singed, and there's a rather entertaining tale of the night we burned a chair in the back yard!) but saffron isn't one of them.

Do you have any turmeric? It might be a close enough match.

It's really bitter. I have saffron in the cupboard (and incense burner by my elbow), so let me know if you need a more detailed description, and I'll burn some for you.

OK. Reminded me of wormwood with an undertaste of hay and sunflower.

I just took two strands of saffron from a jar and touched it to a lighter. Best I can describe it is: like burnt hair only not so nasty.

Saffron itself has got such a unique smell/taste halfway between woodsy and floral, that any variation on it is pretty hard to pin down, I'd say.
