Cultural referents strike again! Based on an IM session today:

Poll #1131576 Gaslighting

Are you familiar with the verb "to gaslight", as in, "Joey's been gaslighting his girlfriend all month"?

That's a sexual reference, isn't it?
Of course I am, and I even know where the term comes from.
Quit making shit up, Lake, and write another story.

But that's only if it comes from the play and/or the movie.

I know the movie, but I've never ever heard anyone actually use that phrase to describe an action (or set of actions).

Also, for my whole childhood, there was a movie theater on Nantucket called the Gaslight (I think they may have changed their name within the last 5 years when it sold or something...I think it is now the starlight.)

"Quit making shit up, Lake, and write another story."

Is that functionally similar to, "Shut up and finish your breakfast"? Because I foresee problems. Unless you've been to Making Shit Up Management Seminars, of course.
