Finnish patient gets new jaw from own stem cells — "Scientists in Finland said they had replaced a 65-year-old patient's upper jaw with a bone transplant cultivated from stem cells isolated from his own fatty tissue and grown inside his abdomen."

Fresh Insight into Evolution — "women with higher recombination rates had more children, suggesting that evolution has selected for molecular mechanisms that create diversity" Huh. And here I thought human reproduction was a social behavior.

Rabbit chases off snake — Very weird video of nature in action. (Courtesy of AH.)

jeffvandermeer on the end of the world as we know it — And I feel fine. Or maybe not.

An Act to Prohibit Certain Food Establishments From Serving Food to Any Person Who Is Obese — Courtesy of the Mississippi state legislature. In draft, I believe. And, um, wow. (Thanks to .)

Just for not interfering in rich powerful people's lives!

Vaguely related:
It seems many legislators are leaping to outlaw more stuff that they learn about on sensationalist Fox News reports.

Don't mess with the wabbits!

Seriously, rabbits are more aggressive than most people realize. I suspect the rabbit in this video was a doe with kits, but maybe not...an irascible rabbit is throughly capable of chivvying a snake (or dog, or cat) just like that one did. They're quite territorial.

(So do I think Monty Python had it right in The Holy Grail? You betcha.)

Wow, that's one kickass rabbit! Should be required viewing for all Democrats in Congress. See, bozos? It CAN be done!

So what's so new about the concept that homo sapiens is on its way out as a species? I don't know about the rest of you, but I've just been hoping for almost as long as I can remember that we wait till after I'm gone of natural causes to implode.

I do regret that we're probably going to take the whole planet with us, however.

a2na and I were talking about that Mississippi legislature, and realized that if it makes any rational sense for it to be illegal for restaurants to serve food to obese people, then seemingly by the same argument it should be illegal for food stores to sell food to obese people, or for friends to serve food to obese guests in their home, and probably even for obese people to grow their own food in their garden. :)

[/sarcasm] Well, of course. Didn't you know that those disgusting fat folks are all supposed to simply starve to death? That's the new solution to human overpopulation, after all: we can't have birth control or abortion, and we can't allow people in persistent vegetative states to be unplugged, because life is sacred, dont'cha know? But there's also nothing that says we have to allow people access to food* and if someone is flawed enough to allow themselves to become obese and ugly and, well, just yucky, then we're well within our rights as a people to insist that they stop eating. Either they'll lose weight and become acceptable members of society, or they'll die off and leave room for someone else.[/sarcasm]

* that anyone's paying attention to, anyway
