the_child has been playing with Club Penguin for a while — an online social environment for pre-teens, basically. She’s wondering about similar sites or games which are age-appropriate for her. Any suggestions?
Games: funbrain, yahoo games, madlibs News, academic, and information: scholastic.com, harcourt brace (math), SRA on line, wildones.org (environmental conservation). ustreasuryforkids.gov, nationalaudubonsociety also some interesting stuff. mancala bugs, mancala snails are also entertaining, at least for me anyway...
There's Neopets, of course - it's a community and games site geared toward preteens. Been a while since I played it as a preteen myself, but here's what it was like then: Players play games to earn money, and then use the money to buy things for their pets (build houses, buy furniture and food, etc.). I think it even still has a virtual stock market. :) There are also forums where they can chat with other players. Fun site, though methods of communication between players are heavily monitored to keep it age-appropriate.
Then there's Gaia Online... which she would probably like, but which might be too old for her. It's another community site - not so many games, and very forum-oriented. If she does decide to try out Gaia, tell her to pm me. My username is Sharaith - I can help her get set up. :)
Gaia's great for 13 year olds - just be aware that there's some fairly mature content on the site (but nothing 18+, and it's easy enough to avoid). It's also more of a forum site than a gaming site, though there are games too - including a large-scale multiplayer adventure game that they just launched.
Neopets has better games, and more of them, but might be too young for her. Depends what she likes.
I have found that anything Wii related is pretty good for any age range. My 86 year old grandfathers loves a lot of the same games that my 5 yr old kicks my butt at. *grins* Can you elaborate on her likes/dislikes, maybe I can get more specific for her.
