Stuck at my parents' house. (Which is nice enough.) Home is only two miles away, but we're up around a foot of mixed snow and ice, more than the past decade combined, and it's still falling. On the plus side, the power has reportedly been restored at Nuevo Rancho Lake.

easy test for power, potentially:

call the house. if you have an answering machine (as opposed to telco-provided voice mail), it'll pick up if the juice is on.

I had this mental image of a cat answering the phone going:

"Yeah, the power's on but you're probably gonna need to throw out most of the stuff in the fridge. Yeah, the pipes seem OK, no leaks. Oh, you're out of beer."

I have a feeling that we are canceling our trip. We're supposed to fly out on Wednesday, but my guess is that it ain't happening.

This is starting to look like 1968. I think PDX had 18 inches/2 feet while the South Willamette Valley had 2 ft/3 ft.

My car is chained and I'm digging out the driveway today. Let's hope this doesn't melt away too fast--at this point the melting would lead to a huge flood if it went off too quickly.

And I've also discovered that when there's that much snow and ice on the ground, two miles can be a long, long drive.

Is it safe enough to strap on some snowshoes and take one of your long walks? Two miles there, two miles back, through the snow - that's a heck of a journey...
