My new short story "On the Human Plan" is live at Lone Star Stories issue 31

Climate change has a firm grip — More liberal propaganda from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, via the Los Angeles Times. Thank God for the Republican Party standing athwart reality shouting, "Lies!" (Thanks to lt260.)

Beau Weaver on Rush Limbaugh — A fascinating overview of the rise and rise of Rush Limbaugh as a talk show personality, and his effect on American political discourse. (Thanks to garyomaha.)

More on the so-called "liberal media" — A week and a half in office, and Newsweek is referring to Afghanistan as "Obama's Vietnam." Um...

Fave sentences: "You know that the first woman to greet the morning had gone to sleep the night before as an ape. Some angel stirred her dreams with God's long spoon, and the next day she remembered the past."

Tre cool of you to slip poetry into your prose, sir.

I do agree it is early calling Afghanistan "Obama's Vietnam," but I do admit there are similarities.

The primary similarities are that the war is not going well, with a resurgence of the Taliban. It is a guerrilla war. And it is an inherited war, much like the Vietnamese War was entered by Kennedy, expanded by LBJ, and then Nixon got it.

But, yeah... To early for the comparison.

?otD: How much longer? Re Rush Limbaugh, until he is dead. I had him quoted to me on Saturday by a sweet and not well educated woman. The conversation turned to waterboarding, which is the only issue she could think of for me to opposed (what a mild and charming word) the scoundrels. Her husband is active duty Navy. I said that it was one of the things I opposed because of the Geneva Agreement (she gave a somewhat wide-eyed blank look), and I said how would she feel if her husband were captured, say by Korea (an example of something that really did happen, with our sailors being tortured) and her husband was waterboarded. That did make her think, but she is brainwashed. She has bought into every statement about Bush keeping us safe (HUH???), and torture giving us good intelligence (what a misuse of that word), and so on. She did not even know that the services for active duty and retired Navy had been truncated, and the Veterans services have deteriorated, all because of lack of funding (thank you Republicans). She is young, her family is young and healthy. It is all at a large remove from her, except for Limbaugh and his ilk on her radio.
