Recently in the Genre car, the_child delivered an unprompted discourse on man's relationship with the environment. These are not precisely verbatim (I was driving at the time and didn't make notes til later), but here's a couple of things she said which struck me.

"Humans should take a day away. Sleep outside, no electronics, only use our hands. Then we'd remember the Earth."

also

"Once the Earth had a language that only it spoke, until we stole it and made all our languages. Now we speak for the Earth. When we're gone, the animals will talk, and someday when they're gone, the Earth will speak again."

That led to a discussion of Deep Time, and how people look at time spans.

Yep, that's my kid.

Striking indeed!

This sentence felt so much like a first sentence of a story to me: "Once the Earth had a language that only it spoke, until we stole it and made all our languages."

Yow. Great thinker there. She's way ahead of abstract thought for her age, methinks.

You think she might be lobbying for a camping trip, there?

I've done that before in younger years, but it's been much too long a time since then.
