Recently I've posted photos of the Anna's hummingbird which is nesting the backyard of Nuevo Rancho Lake. Today the_child took my DSLR with the 300mm lens and went up on the roof to see if she could get a better vantage on the nest.

She succeeded.

Mama hummingbird on the nest.

A blurry photo showing some of her color.

bird_leaving_nest
Mama hummingbird takes wing. We resolved to stay off the roof now so as not to frighten her off her nest permanently.

empty_nest
The empty nest, made of spiderwebs and lichen.

Excellent! One helpful hint, switch to manual focus, and try to focus on where the bird's head will be. The camera's autofocus is focusing on the tree trunk behind the nest, and at that lens opening and zoom position, it's blurring out what's in front of it - not enough depth of field.

Now I see why the hummingbird's back is that color. Cool pictures.

Excellent pictures. All of them. As Kate said, one does demonstrate well why Anna's have the coloring they do.
