I always ask a store clerk before I mess with the stock. I've never yet met one who wasn't delighted. Also, it's fun to flip to the author photo and prove I'm not a weirdo.

(Well, ok, that doesn't actually prove anything about my weirdo status, but at least it proves I'm the weirdo who wrote the book...)

It's a fair question. The author photo is good for something.

Plus I have business cards with my book titles on the back.

In just one bookstore...

Given the Anderson stuff, I was more than a little surprised. So, erm, yes, and extend my gratitude as well.

So...exactly how many times does the main airship in Escapement get attacked, boarded, blown-up, grounded etc... you sure you want someone reading this in flight?

My dream is to look across the airplane aisle and see someone *reading* my book. Then they glance at me, flip back to the author photo, and go, Hey....

Just how regularly do writers in general do these random signings? (Or is it a Jay Lake Thing?)

Just curious.

It's not bad micropromotion, and it's free. I mean, I'm walking past the bookstore anyway... I assume other writers do it.

Then there's the happy "Squeee" *I* get when I find a 'wild caught' signed book.

Extra bookish geeky goodness!

I think the buyer for or manager of that store must be a big genre nerd. I was in there about six weeks ago and picked up Maggie Ronald's _Spiral Hunt_ -- a *debut novel*. I was pretty flabbergasted by that. It, too, was out-facing.

Oh, and someone ought to make "Signed by author" stickers that authors can carry around and slap on books in bookstores when they sign em.
