Neat! I used to live in Monck's Corner, SC once upon a time in 1990. Drove by that monastery all the time and never knew they were so open to the public, or so busy! Thanks for pointing at this.

Nothing strange about the DOF on that image. The train is in focus, as is the far horizon. I imagine what you're seeing is the serious lack of resolution off-axis. If you look, you'll see it occurs most in the corners, and is non-existant in the center of the image. Optics have come a long, long way in the intervening 140 something years.
