Subject: [politics] Blue dogs
Security: Public
Heard on the radio today (no verbatim quote, unfortunately) that the Blue Dog Democrats — conservative Dems in the House — had negotiated hard to delay a vote on the healthcare reform bill until September, because it was too complex and far reaching to rush into, and that members of Congress and the public needed time to read and understand the proposed legislation.

So. Where were those conservative voices warning for careful deliberation and calling for a delayed vote when the Patriot Act was rushed into law? Blue Dogs? Republicans? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

Obama slammed them on that one...

{para phrased}

One advantage of the delay is that members of Congress will have time to read the bill during the break. They can not return and claim not to have read it or understand it.

Jay, we all favor some sort of health reform -- but have you looked at what's in this bill? Many liberals, me among them, think it's a placebo that's realy a sell-out to the insurance companies, and will make things worse. Facism in socialist clothing.

My thoughts precisely. One thing among many that I learned during the Eight Nightmare Years was that whenever a Republican is in a hurry - watch out, becuase they're trying to ram something very large and very horrible up the body politic. And listening to the same jerks whine about how BIG this bill is and "How could we possibly even READ the thing, let alone vote on it?" just makes me want to vomit. They're right, of course - but the point, as always with Republicans, is the fucking hypocrisy.

It's another month in which to get big piles of cash from the health insurance companies, and, not coincidentally, another month for said companies to do their best to derail the whole process. Your bought and paid for government at work.

The blue dogs in the House are afraid to commit until they know what the Senate is going to do. The bill itself was barely changed in this compromise (a good thing)--the only substantial thing they got is the delay.

Write your elected representatives and tell them what you want. There is no solid, reputable voice for the conservative anti-reform crowd at the moment, not like Gingrich in '94. A popular push can have a lot of effect.
