Can anyone recommend a good literary arts lawyer in Portland, OR or vicinity? (Oregon side, not Washington side.) I need a spot of paperwork done, and my regular attorney recommends such a specialist. Thanks!

What exactly should one be looking for in a literary arts lawyer? And is it best to have one when you start agent shopping?

I don't think you need one for agent shopping, though some people will tell you otherwise. More to the point, literary contracts, as well as standards and practices, are pretty lateral to much other contract law, even (or especially) IP law. So, for example, a software IP attorney would be not just challenging but possibly useless in this process. You want someone with specific experience in literary contracts, copyrights etc.

In my case, I want to execute a limited power of attorney with respect to my literary estate — this was presuming I might be incapacitated for some length of time during my cancer treatments. So it's not the most usual thing to do. However, in a larger sense, all working writers with copyrights that are earning money should be concerned with literary executorship. And that also requires a literary arts lawyer.

You know, once you work this out, it might well be a good subject for either a blog post or an article talking about these issues. If you don't want to write it, talk to me.
