Check out the Fictional Character Pickup Line contest: [ jlake.com | LiveJournal ]

The 2011 Reno WorldCon bid now has a twitter account, @Reno2011 — If you're a tweeple, check it out.

Women, Water and Death — "Tell of your homeworld, Usul."

Drainspotting — The art of manhole covers. (Snurched from Vintagraph.)

External Use OnlyLanguage Log on the phenomenon of "nerdview". I've been going through something similar recently with the_child. She's begun to carefully parse road signs, or try to. The embedded assumptions are sometimes surprising. For example, she asked me why I kept driving past signs which said, "DO NOT PASS." Clearly, I was passing those signs.

A more efficient spacecraft engine — Ion propulsion. Mmm. ETA: A working rocket scientist comments on this item.

Anomalies and their usesCentauri Dreams with some not-so-minor mysteries of spacetime here in the solar system.

Remember To Wear Your Brown Shirt — How the Republicans win arguments. In case you somehow thought conservative opposition to the healthcare reform process was principled.

?otD: What ever happened to 54'40" or fight?

Body movement: n/a (overslept)

The External Use Only link + your comments reminds me of a joke: Two priests are at the side of a road, holding up a big sign that reads THE END IS NEAR. A guy drives by the pair, dismissing them as kooks. A couple of minutes later, a huge splash is heard in the distance. One priest looks at the other and says, "I told you we should have printed 'BRIDGE IS OUT' on here instead."

As for what happened to 54"40' Or Fight!, it's an indie-rock record label now: http://www.myspace.com/5440orfight

Ion propulsion would not be the same thing in Romania, I think.

Re the healthcare bill, criticism from the left is more important, imo.
Many liberals, me among them, think it is a placebo, a sell-out to the insurance companies, which will in fact make things worse in many ways.

Lynn Woolsey has good liberal cred.

Woolsey is the author of a letter signed by 60 fellow House liberals vowing to vote against a deal cut with the Blue Dogs. Liberals feel the bill weakens the “public option,” the group’s signature issue in the healthcare debate.

in re to the "brown shirt" thing. When Orly Taitz first called dude on msnbc a brown shirt, I thought I heard "brownCOAT" and I got all butthurt, thinking, "what the hell does she have against Firefly fans???"

On a related note, due to my internet message board and irc addiction, I always read Orly Taitz's first name as "Oh, reeeeally?"
