I had open-heart surgery in 1972, when I was eight, and I remember ashtrays in every doctor's office and the waiting rooms smoky as any dive bar. On October 1st Montana will be smoke free everywhere, even those dive bars. We certainly have come a long way.

I can remember at my first job in 1980, telling someone that cigarette smoke makes me ill, and her saying solicitiously, oh, here, let me move my ashtray to the other end of the table [sigh].

Now, in Washington state, you can't smoke within 25 *feet* of a doorway, window, or ventilation grate of any public building, let alone inside. It's so wonderful to be able to go to a bar occasionally again...
