My book is mine, not Google's — More on the banal evil of the rights grab that is the Google Books Settlement.

Why science fiction authors just can't win — More notes from the ghetto.

Undead Machinerydeadmachinery with a very strange and spooky video of a pair of derelict steam locomotives being moved by rail.

Animals Survived Apocalypse by Burrowing — But can you burrow to survive the zombie apocalypse?

A double-ringed basin on MercuryAPOD with a very interesting photo, including also a link through to imaging and description of a similar feature on Earth.

The Conservative Bible project — More on reinterpreting the word of god. Um, yeah.

John Stewart schools Sean Hannity on history, ecology — The Klamath protests are such classic conservative bullshit. Farmers whose entire water supply only exists because of government intervention are protesting to keep the government's hands off their water supply. (Yes, I know it's more complex than that, but this is what the Klamath water use issue boils down to.) That's right up with there with "keep the government out of my Medicare" as a nonsensical conservative talking point.

?otD: So you say it's your birthday?

:)

The Gospel of Saint John was written AFTER the Apocalypse of Saint John (Revelations). John wasn't warning against adding to the Bible, he was warning against adding to one specific book.

Ballard and Atwood are idiots. And dinosaurs.

There are other "literary" writers proudly crossing the genre lines, or denying that any exist. Michael Chabon wrote a young adult fantasy and an alternate history. China Mieville writes urban fantasy. And Chabon calls it as it is. Though he said that The Road wasn't sf, it was only in order to rebrand it as horror. Stephen King is publishing in McSweeney's and Tin House. Octavia Butler fills classes in black lit across the country.

What's more, in a Bachelor's and Master's in creative writing, I've seen every teacher I had embrace genre fiction. They might not prefer it personally, but none of them degrade it.

Most of all, the collective readers of the world aren't idiots. Ballard and Atwood might blather on, but anyone who reads The Handmaid's Tale with half a brain will realize that it is science fiction.

Don't stress it.
