The Child Reads

Yesterday, whilst roaming around the C concourse at PDX, our fine airport in Portland, the Child and I were looking at the fifty foot long brass map of the flow of the Columbia embedded in the flooring of the central vending concourse. We were working our way west, past the tributaries, and came to the lettered which read "JOHN DAY". I asked her what the letters said, expecting her to read out "J - O - H - N - D - A - Y", as she's been able to do for several years now.

She looked at them for a moment and said, ""

It was the first time I've ever seen her read, something from random text.
