Publishing industry stats

This morning a link to this collection of publishing industry stats came over a mailing list I'm on. I can't vouch for the accuracy, or even the meaningfulness, of the info, but it's interesting.

My favorite section:

58% of the US adult population never reads another book after high school.
42% of college graduates never read another book.
80% of US families did not buy or read a book last year.
70% of US adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years.
57% of new books are not read to completion.

"I thought that they were angels, when much to my surprise...

...they climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies."

I wish. But only if the starship has air conditioning. Maybe I should have gone with the Warren Zevon lyric about listening to the air conditioner hum.

It's an oven out here today (by Portland standards, that's low 90s to the rest of you). I've Been Productive, though the two stories need to steep some more. mtrimm1 had some choice things to say about one of them. However, I am meeting my goals for productivity.

Ah me, diving back into the copy edit momentarily.
