Cheese for the holidays

Me? Obsessive? Perish the thought.

Popped over to Pastaworks this morning to buy cheese and bread for today and tomorrow.

That's cheese for today's Christmas Eve dinner at tillyjane's house. She's off tomorrow morning to visit my Aunt V. for the holiday, so we're celebrating now, and again on the 6th of January. It's also cheese for Christmas dinner at karindira's house tomorrow, with all manner of people. Plus a bit of dairy cheer for Mother of the Child.

That's another round of Sottocenere al Tartufo, because you can't have too much of a good thing. Plus the Meadow Creek Dairy cheeses I recently procured from icedrake and katfeete, Appalachian, Grayson, Mountaineer and Hot Pepper Mountaineer. I'm also going to throw in some leftover Manchego which is loitering in my refrigerator. That's all being served with a quarter round of peasant bread and a half-sheet of garlic focaccia.

That's another round of St Marcellin, since karindira liked it so much at a recent party, plus some lovely Pastor Picón mixed-milk Spanish blue, as well Old Amsterdam Gouda and Ostallois -- a mix for less adventurous palates since I don't think the crowd at karindira's is a cheese-oriented as the crowd at tillyjane's. That will be served with a Parisienne bread from Pearl Street Bakery.

Since we're all going gaga over that Sottocenere al Tartufo around here lately I got a bit for the Mother of the Child, along with a rustic roll.

Full reports later on the new cheeses.

Whatever your holiday observance has been, is, or will be, enjoy then one and all with people you care for. I'm going to enjoy my family, my friends and my cheese, in that order.

Be of good cheese this yuletide

This afternoon the_child and I went to the house of tillyjane and AH for a pre-Christmas dinner. Sister E. was there, as was a friend from their choir, and S., who is my long-lost step-step-brother. We enjoyed the cheese board and watched A Christmas Story, which I still find pants-wetting funny, then eventually had a terrific dinner -- rump roast, Yorkshire pudding and green beans, with a green salad featuring walnuts, feta, cranberries and raspberry vinaigrette dressing.

Dessert was a bit more problematic, with an attempt at an Arabian ribbon cake which resulted in one of the Collapse )

It was reported to be tasty, but since I'm not crazy about dried fruit, which is the intralayer filling, I skipped it in favor of some plain spice cake. the_child did make the icing, under grandmaternal supervision.

Amusing note: tillyjane, having procured sparkling cranberry-apple juice for the_child, offered her sparkling crappleadberry juice. I have trouble even saying that, but it was a genuine, spontaneous speech error.

As for the cheese board, it was lovely as expected. The two established favorites on the board were Manchego (an old friend) and Sottocenere al Tartufo (a recent friend you're probably sick of hearing about by now). The new friends were the aforementioned Meadow Creek Dairy cheeses recently procured courtesy of icedrake and katfeete.
