[photos] Tour de Fat

Yesterday I met rosefox and several of her friends for a spin down to the Tour de Fat to hang out with the hard core bicycle crowd and see Circus Contraption.

Sadly, the circus started just as I had to leave for Seattle, but we still had a very cool time noshing at the Saturday Market, then checking out the rad bikes and more-rad people at the festival.

I didn't catch the name of the first band that was on, but rosefox reminds me that first band was The Yard Dogs Road Show. They were something else — very, very good.

[writing] The miracle of names

Working on Escapement, I have just changed the name of one of the airships in this book from Borborygmus to Notus. A sad day, for I liked the rumbling malice of Borborygmus as the name of an aerial ship of war, but others did not find that monicker such a gas as I did. Not everyone has the stomach for this kind of humor.

[personal] Sights that chill a parent's heart

the_child is home from the Shakespeare festival. (More about that anon.) We went out to rent a video, the long promised first Harry Potter movie. On the way back, as she was delivering a critique of the production of Romeo and Juliet, we were passed by a police cruiser running full tilt boogie. A couple of blocks later there was a car in the ditch by the side of the road, where the cruiser had stopped. Then I saw a child's bicycle smashed against the curb.

the_child wasn't looking in the right direction, so she missed that last detail, but the whole business made me feel very ill. I can only hope and pray things are ok there. I will check the news cycle tomorrow and see.
