A comment on the political history of racism — Confidential to GOP in America: when the Democratic party was full of segregationists, they were conservatives. "Democrat" and "liberal" are not synonymous even now, and were far less so in earlier days.

[funny] Working the day after Christmas

Twas the day after Christmas and all through the office
Not a creature was stirring, not even a rush fax
The email boxes were closed out with care
In hopes that their owners would not have to be there

The boss was on vacation, I was at my desk
When out on the floor I heard a great mess
I rose from my chair to see what was the matter
Peered over the cube wall to check out the clatter

When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a client with a work order for revenue so dear
I sprang to the hallway, I sprinted across the floor
It was imperative to stop them before they found the door

The quarter was soon to close as it was
Booking some business would be a good cause!
The client was shifty, tricksy and quick
He moved like a golfball that had just been flicked

I was the quicker, I knew the best way to run
Left at the coffee maker, around to the front
I wrestled the client down and jammed a pen in his hand
I told him this was where I would stand

Until he signed off on revenue to start the new year
And round out my commission which I hold so dear
With a wink of his eye and a twitch of his nose
My client signed off and up the chimney he rose

I heard him explain 'ere he climbed in his Benz
Merry Christmas to All! And a Happy Year End!

[awards] Mucking about with Nebula recs

As recently emphasized here and elsewhere, there is a late-breaking movement to punch up the Nebula ballot. What have you read or seen this year that you think might want to be on that ballot? I'm looking for suggestions of things I might have overlooked. (And yes, I've already made some recs.)

ETA: I'm certainly not going to read much new between right now and the end of the year. What I'm looking for is jogs to my memory of stuff I saw earlier on.

[writin] Progriss riport

3,000 words on Green today to 65,000 words.

I've reached the end of Act I of the novel, structurally speaking. This also means I have just reached the end of the expanded version of the short story. The expansion ratio (so to speak) is just about 10:1, from a 6,700 word short piece to 65,000 words of novel.

I'll have some thoughts later about the differences between the two. It's rare for me to have that difference cast so directly as this process.
