Dark Energy Survey AdvancesCentauri Dreams with some cool science, some cool tech and an extremely cool photograph.

Data Retention Effectively Changes the Behavior of Citizens in Germany — Just remember, the innocent have nothing to fear.

Making with the eye babies — A description of Pensacola Christian College. While I realize that many of the world’s great universities have roots as religious schools, the increasingly high profile credibility of Evangelical diploma mills (especially law schools!) has frightening implications on a number of fronts.

Republicans, Democrats Differ on Creationism — Gallup with a poll on Creationism and evolution. Cripes, I don’t know why they’re blaming Republicans on this one. According to this piece, less than 20% of Americans across the board poll for a purely natural explanation. Our entire country is infected by idiocy. Repeat after me: spiritual truth is not equivalent to empirical truth.

[cancer] A bit of an update

The operation was seven weeks ago tomorrow. At this point, I am pain free, and mostly free of discomfort. I don’t quite have full range of motion restored (I can’t bend and twist all that well), but mostly my abdominal muscles are working. In the past week, the significant discomfort of my bowel movements has all but vanished.

I still have a brain made of Swiss cheese. I’m not amnesiac, but I am dreadfully absent-minded, sometimes over major issues. I still have very low energy days every second or third day, where after a few hours of initial energy, I can do little but lie on the couch or in the recliner. I still cannot read much in print, though I can read a lot on the screen. (And why is that?)

A bit of medical TMI:

[conventions] Iron Springs

[conventions] isn’t quite the right tag, but I haven’t yet bothered to use a [conferences] tag. I’m off in the morning to Iron Springs, which is a low-key writing retreat on the Pacific Coast up in the Olympic Peninsula. (Pauses for reader envy.) the_child will be with me there, and we will have Cheese Friday night.

As far as I know, the resort we’re using has ca. Korean War era infrastructure, so I don’t expect wireless coverage or Internet access. That means this blog will probably go dark until Sunday night. I’m sure all of you will persevere wo|manfully, as you so often do.

I will attempt to secure an awesome photo or two while I’m there, plus get a bunch of work done on a Sekrit Projekt.
