The Odd Case Against Susan Rice — Ta-Nehisi Coates on the inherent racism in the GOP's current attempt to gin up another nothingburger scandal. The notion that you can separate who Republicans target, from how their base tends to evaluate those targets is willfully naive.

Bill O'Reilly's "Leave It to Beaver" nightmare — What was actually happening in the GOP's beloved traditional America. (Hint: this employs those liberal "facts" about tax rates and income inequality, drawn from actual "history" of 1960, and is therefore not valid for conservatives who fondly imagine a completely different past than actually existed.)

Tom turkey on his way into the oven, bacon makes him self-basting

Tom turkey on his way out of the oven, the bacon was yummy

Us at our table, except for Jersey Girl in Portland, who is wielding the camera — from left to right, me, [info]the_child, [info]tillyjane (a/k/a my mom), and Lisa Costello.

Me, modeling a most delightful hat somewhere in the course of the day

The menu was roasted brined turkey (unstuffed, with bacon strips, on a veggie rack), sweet potatoes, garlic mashed potatoes, celery casserole, fresh made whole cranberry sauce, jellied cranberry sauce (in the can like we all ate as children), stuffing, gravy and knot rolls [ recipe ], with apple pie for dessert. Everything was fresh or scratch made except the canned cranberry sauce, and everyone contributed to the cooking, serving and cleaning up. A small, yummy feast.

Which we're doing again tomorrow with a rather larger group of friends and family because my dad and (step)mom are back in town, except that Team E— be providing smoked pork butt in lieu of roasted turkey. Also discussed were plans for a Peking duck feast (also all home made) in early 2013.
