Scrivener's Error on (among other thing) academic liberalism — A key point which doesn't get made often enough. The American conservative view that "if you're not with us, you're against us" has been bought into by the media, and by many centrists and liberal-progressives. It's really not a bipolar axis, even if many observers (including myself) often fall into the trap of assuming so.

Mention of non-apocalypses and the grey day outside reminds me of a day when I was at school (40 years ago) It was suddenly darkness at noon and raining like the end of the world, something otherwise sensible people (my mother) thought it was. Subsequently we were told there were 4 miles of cloud above Middlesbrough (14? Maybe. 40? Probably not.) So it was just a metereological freak rather than the end of days. An hour later the sun was shining (of course it had always been shining, just we couldn't see it, through all the cloud and rain)

Obla di, obla da, life goes on.

I find fivethirtyeight.com's headline "Divorce Rates Higher in States With Gay Marriage Bans" infelicitous.

I think it implies "...than in states allowing gay marriage."

Whereas the thrust of their article is even more damning: that divorce rates in such states are higher than they had been. Yes, friends, divorce rates are disporoportionately increasing in the Must! Defend! Marriage! states. (And sharply decreasing in the states with more liberal laws.)

Well, that neatly explains why they're so concerned, doesn't it?! ;)
