Plaque? Dental plaque? A plague of plaque, of Biblical proportions, from the department of weird chemo side effects.

What is chemo doing to my arteries?

In other news, back home to Portland this afternoon. calendula_witch arrives tomorrow morning.

Perhaps this article can bring you *some* comfort:

(Dental plaque and arterial plaque may have some correlation, but the ADA isn't sure what, if any, it is.)

Let me guess: chemo is hammering your immune system along with the cancer (it primarily affects cell lineages which are actively reproducing; your immune and blood systems fall into this category, along with the cancer). Plaque is actually a bacterial biofilm. When the immune system's at bay, bacteria may play.

Might be an idea to invest in some extra strength anti-bacterial mouthwash and use it multiple times a day. Or leave it alone, as an indicator of other stuff. (If you get a cough or an infection? Go see a doctor immediately. Stuff you can shrug off while your immune system is fully functional can be life-threatening when it isn't.)

Apologies if you already know this stuff. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I though you were supposed to win your commemorative plaque after you come through all this!

I once had a anti-reflux med turn my teeth plaque green. My kids thought I was hiding out with green lollipops.

A friend of mine had the same issue -- weird tartar, actually. Thankfully, it didn't persist too long after the chemo. It's been several years (after bone mets) and he is thus far still doing well.
