Werner Herzog reads Curious George — Hahaha.

"I dreamed I was twins in my Maidenform bra" — Um...

The sandpile model of Congress

The Other Terrorisms — Christianist lies, intimidation and murder against abortion. You know, the stuff that it's persecution to speak out against, despite the deaths and terror? I simply don't understand the Christianist obsession with forced pregnancy.

[South Carolina] Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has compared giving people government assistance to "feeding stray animals." — Ah, compassionate conservatism.

?otD: Are you curious, George?

Heh, those Maidenform "I dreamed" ads are hilarious. Here's a particularly creepy one:

And a parody from the July 1961 Mademoiselle:

His phrasing and attitude are troglodytic, but I do have to commend a couple of the specific suggestions he makes: for example, "the government should place incentives in its welfare programs, such as providing child care so parents can work or receive education so they can break the welfare cycle." A guy at my work lost his job this summer because of absenteeism due to child care issues; I would like to see a civically-supported child care program.

On the whole, however, it's pretty clear he thinks poor people are maggots. My parents received assistance (IIRC, food stamps, what would now be WIC) for a brief period in the 80's. I was pretty young, but it was distinctly a pretty sucky period--would have been *much* worse without assistance.

Sure, everybody else laughs about it, but if you were named 'George', the Curious George books were anything but a hoot. Although I always did want to star in the Swedish version, I Am Curious: George.
