Subject: [help] Identifying a photo from Bremen, Germany, ca. 1955

Hello, Internets. My sister is scanning old family photos. We're trying to identify the bridge pictured below. My grandfather took the photo, probably in 1955, we believe in Bremen, Germany. Can anyone help us with the bridge name, location or historical info?

My dad thinks the river is the Rhine or the Sale, possibly the Rhine, in Cologne or downstream of Cologne. Don't know if that helps.

Wow! What a cool bridge. You think the ID on it would come back in a hurry.

I'm no help because I simply don't know, but I had to say that's one of the most beautiful bridges I think I've ever seen. Wow. Thanks for that, Jay.

How did you find it? I was poking around myself and I'm curious as to your technique.

Nicely done!

I looked at a lot of old German bridges last night :P

And tried real hard to read the sign on that tram/bus in the picture, but I needed some of those CSI guys to enhance it for me.

Although one record claims it only dates to 1927-1929, it looks as if the Neue Elbbrucke originally dates from 1887. In 1960 it was supposedly widened, with box girders put on either side, which then carried the road; the original core of the bridge was used for the tram. The portals were supposedly demolished at this time, and in fact looking at the pictures half of the old structure was too (your picture clearly shows that it has three lenses each of THREE main girders; there are only two showing in subsequent pictures). In 1976 the tram route was replaced by bus lanes. So your picture definitely predates 1960.

See http://www.alt-veddel.de/elbbruecken.htm for a lot more fun pictures.
