Subject: [politics] Your simplified political dictionary
Security: Public
Tags:guns, healthcare, iraq, politics
This is your simplified political dictionary for today.

  • If you're pro-life and you support the death penalty, you're not pro-life.

  • If you're pro-life and you support the Iraq War, you're not pro-life.

  • If you're pro-life and you own a handgun, you're not pro-life.

  • If you're fiscally conservative and you vote Republican, you're not fiscally conservative.

  • If you're for family values and you vote Republican, you're not for family values.

  • If you're for limited government and you vote Republican, you're not for limited government.

  • If you're pro-America and you support teach alternatives to evolution, you're not pro-America.

  • If you're anti-tax but you want to be able to call 911 in an emergency, you're not anti-tax.

  • If you're anti-government but you want the potholes filled in the road, you're not anti-government.

  • If you're against government healthcare but are on Medicare, you're not against government healthcare.

  • If you're against single-provider healthcare but are in the VA system, you're not against single-provider healthcare.

  • If you're Christian but you pray for the death of political opponents, you're not Christian.

Intellectual consistency is fun. Try your own examples!

The anti-taxers in Santa Cruz actually ran a quiet but horribly effective campaign to repeal the 911 tax on the grounds that Porposition 13 (the state constitutional ammendment that began the long process of dismantling the state budget and destroying the state of California) had made the process by which it had come to be unconstitutional, and then, also successfully, campaigned against the new tax the city council proposed to meet the anti-taxers' objections.

Thus forcing the city to pay for 911 out of other funds, because you can't not have emergency services. (It means dirtier, less safe parks, more holes in the roads, and fewer hours for the dump and fewer hours for the garbage men)

There's a lot of reasons why I love Santa Cruz (went to UCSC for uni), but the politics there aren't one of them.

If you're angry at the partisan politics in the US House and think gerrymandering is not a big deal, then you're not against partisan politics.

I'll agree with all of these, except:

If you're pro-America and you support teach alternatives to evolution, you're not pro-America.

The alternatives need to be taught, not necessarily as truths, but as part of giving students a full understanding of evolution theory and scientific method. That's not anti-American.

At what point is the sky god's involvement (i.e. Creationism/Intelligent Design) part evolution or scientific method?

Theology belongs in theology classes. In science classes, teach that which is science. If someone asks about God, direct the question to theologians.

If you're pro-life and you own a handgun, you're not pro-life.

What if you own a bow and arrow? Or practice martial arts? Sure they're a bit more archaic but both could be used to hurt people.

There are those out there who own hand guns for things like target shooting and not as replacement penises or shotgun for shooting clay pigeons, and not just because clay pigeons are fuckers as Eddie Izzard says. They enjoy the sport, as much as those people who do martial arts for exercise and personal fulfillment or archery because they enjoy the sport. It's all in the application of the tool being used.

A handgun has no purpose other than to kill or wound people. Martial arts, bows, and even other kinds of guns serve other purposes, but handguns don't. And if you own a handgun, you're statistically more likely to accidentally use it on someone in your own family than on a burglar.

There are people who need to be wounded or killed.

Really? Name two.

NB: statements of fact made in the passive voice tend to betray a whole bunch of underlying ideological assumptions -- and when they revolve around killing people, I think an element of sociopathy comes into them too.

How about if you're a patriot and you want to secede, you're not a patriot.

That one just seems obvious t'me.

If you're pro-life and don't believe climate change is real, you're not pro-life.

If you are against gay marriage and a "Constitutionalist" you haven't read the Constitution.

If you're a "Constitutionalist" and discriminate against anyone (race, sex, gender, religion, LGBTQ) you haven't read the Constitution.

If you're a "Constitutionalist" and think Christianity is our national religion, you haven't read the Constitution.
